Luke graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce. He was admitted to practice in Western Australia and the Commonwealth Courts in October 2014, joining Piper Alderman as a Special Counsel in 2024.

He has over 10 years’ experience in commercial litigation, acting in both advisory and litigious matters, including in relation to general commercial and corporate matters, insolvency matters and matters arising under or in relation to the Corporations Act and the Bankruptcy Act.

Luke regularly acts on behalf of directors, companies, insolvency practitioners and high net worth individuals, providing commercial advisory and dispute resolution services. His recent litigious and advisory experience includes:

• Acting for insolvency practitioners in relation to issues and disputes arising during External Administrations, including insolvent trading trust issues, directions applications and remuneration approval applications.
• Acting for a company in claims involving allegations of breaches of contract and breaches of the Australian Consumer Law.
• Acting for directors and shareholders in matters involving disputes with other shareholders.
• Acting for former directors of a company in relation to a complex breach of fiduciary duties and directors’ duties claim.
• Acting for a borrower and guarantor to resist enforcement attempts by a lender on the basis that the security documents were voidable and or unenforceable, including due to misleading or deceptive conduct and by reason of estoppel.
• Acting for a director and the director’s related entities in the buy-out of another party’s interests in the business.
• Acting for a company in a substantial commercial refinance, including in negotiations concerning, and advising in respect of, the terms of transaction documents.
• Acting for a statutory body, including advising in relation to its statutory obligations and general operations.

Meriel is an internationally recognised dispute resolution and litigation lawyer with expertise in domestic and international arbitrations, court-ordered and private mediations and expert determinations.

As a leading advisor in the energy, mining, transport, construction, agribusiness and life sciences and healthcare sectors, she has also worked in London, the Caribbean and is highly experienced in the Australian court system having practised in both Sydney and Perth, as well as running cases in Melbourne.

Meriel assists clients at the contract drafting and negotiation stage of a transaction in order to put them in the best position to avoid a future dispute.

Meriel has a broad range of disputes experience, including: advising on domestic gas and LNG pricing disputes; representing clients in industries including agribusiness and mining on joint venture disputes; and advising clients in industries including mining, life sciences and healthcare, logistics, shipping and transport, on complex contractual disputes. She also regularly advises clients about corporate and minority shareholder disputes, construction disputes and on acquisitions by scheme of arrangement.

In addition to holding a First Class Honours Degree in Law, Meriel is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Company Directors course.

Meriel holds positions on two Not-For-Profit Boards, being a Director of both the Australian British Chamber of Commerce (WA Branch) and the Australia-Africa Minerals & Energy Group (AAMEG).  She is also a mentor with Mentor Walks and an active member of 100 Women and the British Business Network.
