In Memoriam: Cheryl Weston

22/12/2025

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our colleague, partner and friend, Cheryl Weston, on 22 November 2025. Cheryl was a widely respected insolvency and litigation lawyer whose professionalism, warmth and unwavering strength of purpose left an indelible mark on Piper Alderman and the clients she served.

A distinguished career in restructuring and litigation

Cheryl joined Piper Alderman in 2019 as a Partner in our national Restructuring & Insolvency team in Sydney, and was renowned for her composure, class and client care. Colleagues across the firm witnessed her ability to mentor by example: calm under pressure, exacting in preparation, and considerate in her dealings with clients and the courts.

Over her career, Cheryl contributed to some of the country’s most intricate administrations and proceedings, including high-profile matters such as the ACCC’s proceedings involving the AMI companies in administration, the administrations of St Hilliers Group, BC3 Thoroughbreds and van Eyk Research, and major litigation connected to James Hardie’s insurance program and the HIH Insurance collapse. She also acted in significant proceedings for NSW Lotteries and a major class action against former superannuation entities.

Within Piper Alderman’s Dispute Resolution & Litigation practice, Cheryl’s work touched a range of substantial matters, including the Bogasi proceedings concerning beneficial ownership of substantial trust assets.

Cheryl’s family

Beyond her many professional achievements, Cheryl loved and took pride in her family. She is survived by her husband Trent and her son Taylor, a former Piper Alderman colleague. As we mourn her passing, we extend our deepest condolences to Trent and Taylor.

Chairman of Partners, Gordon Grieve, speaks on behalf of the Piper Alderman team on Cheryl’s passing:

“It is with great sadness, professional and personal loss that our partner and friend Cheryl Weston has passed away. Cheryl had been fighting melanoma cancer for a number of years. Throughout the difficult and painful times Cheryl continued working with incredible strength of purpose and cheerfulness. Cheryl always presented herself as a woman of great style and a true legal professional. Our hearts and thoughts go out to Cheryl’s husband, Trent, and son, Taylor, at this very tragic time.”

Her legacy

Cheryl’s legacy at Piper Alderman is one of excellence, mentorship and courage. The resilience she displayed over recent years while continuing to support clients and colleagues will remain an enduring inspiration.
