Ian is a seasoned dispute resolution and litigation lawyer with over 30 years of national and international experience. He has a wide range of expertise in areas such as:
- Corporate law – derivative, oppression, governance, director and officers duties, regulatory matters
- Commercial law- contractual breach, termination, recission, partnership and trust matters
- Trade practices – Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees, anti-competitive activities, price fixing, misleading and deceptive conduct and unconscionability matters
- Property law- leases, recission and breach of contract of sale
- Insurance – indemnity, public, product, D&O, reinsurance and personal injury matters.
During his career Ian has worked with clients in many industries, including agribusiness, health and life sciences, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, automotive, transport and logistics.
Ian is a proactive and trusted adviser to his clients and their businesses. He advises on and acts in disputes in all major courts and tribunals in Australia. He provides strategic business advice that improves the way clients operate and manage business risk. He has worked with a range of clients in large litigation to mid-sized cases involving individuals and companies in Australia and overseas, for example, in the US, Canada, UK and Europe, and he has given advice in international arbitration matters in the US and Canada. Ian leads Piper Alderman’s Australia – India (and SE Asia) practice and actively promotes inbound and outbound opportunities principally involving India.
Ian is also an expert in managing Royal Commissions and quasi-judicial proceedings for clients in various tribunals on a national basis.
