Piper Alderman advises Jumbuck Pastoral on sale of Rawlinna Station

10/11/2025

National law firm Piper Alderman is proud to have advised its long-standing client, Jumbuck Pastoral—owned by the MacLachlan family—on the sale of Rawlinna Station to UK-based Consolidated Pastoral Company (CPC).

Located on the remote Nullarbor Plain in Western Australia, Rawlinna Station is the largest sheep station in Australia spanning more than 1 million hectares. Established by the MacLachlan family in 1962, the property has been a cornerstone of Jumbuck Pastoral’s operations for over six decades.

The purchaser, CPC, is a large, privately owned, UK-based agribusiness with a significant footprint across Australia. It is understood the acquisition of Rawlinna Station is part of CPC’s strategy to invest in and expand its sheep and wool production, and that CPC intends to continue operating Rawlinna as a premier sheep and wool enterprise.

Piper Alderman advised Jumbuck Pastoral on all aspects of the transaction, from initial contract preparation, ongoing contract performance and ultimately through to settlement.

The transaction involved three separate pastoral leases, multiple vendor entities, and regulatory considerations, including FIRB and WA government pastoral lease approval requirements, all navigated under tight timeframes while ensuring uninterrupted station operations.

The legal team was led by Perth Partner Catherine Wheeler, with support from Partner Paul Sartori and Senior Conveyancer Kelly Robinson.

The team’s deep expertise in agribusiness, WA land tenure and property transactions was instrumental in addressing the unique challenges associated with pastoral lease transfers, livestock management, and operational logistics.

Reflecting on the transaction, Catherine Wheeler said:

“It was a pleasure advising and representing the MacLachlan family on this significant transaction. Rawlinna Station holds a special place in the MacLachlan family’s history – it was a privilege to guide them through the sale process and deliver an outcome they were pleased with.”

Piper Alderman’s relationship with the MacLachlan family spans many years and the firm is proud to have supported them through this sale.

Jumbuck Pastoral operates a substantial portfolio and remains one of the largest cattle and sheep producers in Australia.

This landmark transaction further reinforces Piper Alderman’s reputation as a leading legal adviser on Australia’s most significant, complex, and high-value agribusiness transactions.
