Large transmission infrastructure project to power South Australia’s mining industry

ElectraNet is an electricity transmission company focusing on developing energy and infrastructure solutions. Piper Alderman was pleased to work with the ElectraNet team to successfully deliver this significant high-voltage transmission line and electricity substation.

Piper Alderman advised ElectraNet on its Design and Construct contract with CIMIC’s UGL to design, construct and commission high voltage substations and transmission lines that connect OZ Minerals to the South Australian electricity grid. As part of the contract, UGL designed, constructed, and commissioned switching station infrastructure and approximately 300kms of high voltage transmission lines.

Additionally, we advised ElectraNet on its build, own, operate, and maintain (BOOM) and transmission connection arrangements with OZ Minerals. OZ Minerals agreed with ElectraNet to construct the new 300km high voltage transmission line and associated infrastructure to support its Prominent Hill operations in South Australia’s upper north region. The transmission line replaced the existing BHP facility and began operation in 2020.

ElectraNet’s Chief Executive, Steve Masters, said the project was the largest ElectraNet has ever undertaken to date and the new OZ Minerals connection will play a critical role in powering the mines’ operations. Piper Alderman’s legal experience in commercial contracts and projects allowed the team to undertake its mandate effectively.
