Travis Shueard is a Partner in Piper Alderman’s Intellectual Property and Technology team, based in Adelaide. He is an intellectual property litigator and technology law adviser whose practice sits at the intersection of IP enforcement, artificial intelligence (AI) regulation, and defence industry law.
Travis advises Australian and international organisations on the protection, commercialisation, and enforcement of intellectual property rights, and on the legal and regulatory issues arising from AI and other advanced technologies. His clients span the defence, technology, advanced manufacturing, food and beverage, mining, financial services, and higher education sectors, and rely on him to navigate disputes and regulatory challenges that combine legal complexity with deep technical subject matter.
As an experienced intellectual property litigator, Travis acts in complex, high-value disputes involving trade marks, patents, copyright, registered designs, confidential information, and consumer law. He has appeared in significant intellectual property matters before Australian courts and is known for developing strategic, commercially grounded solutions to technically complex litigation, from infringement and validity disputes to matters involving trade secrets and confidential information.
A recognised voice in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence law, Travis advises organisations on AI governance, AI regulation, intellectual property issues arising from AI systems, technology risk, commercialisation, and responsible AI deployment. He regularly contributes to discussions on artificial intelligence policy and has been invited by government agencies, defence organisations, and universities to provide thought leadership on the legal and regulatory implications of AI.
Travis has particular expertise in the defence industry, acting for defence contractors, technology companies, and defence-adjacent businesses. His work includes advising on defence procurement, technology transfer, export controls (such as the Defence Trade Controls Act 2012 (Cth) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)) and related regulatory compliance obligations. He currently serves as Deputy Chair of the Defence Teaming Centre, one of Australia’s leading defence industry organisations, reflecting his standing within Australia’s defence and advanced technology community.
Beyond his legal practice, Travis tutors intellectual property law at Adelaide University and is a member of the university’s Research Unit on Military Law & Ethics (RUMLAE).
“I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Travis, a highly skilled and knowledgeable lawyer specialising in Australian defence industry and export controls. Travis has a deep understanding of this complex regulatory landscape and his ability to navigate the intricate details of compliance is invaluable. Travis is not only thorough in his approach but also insightful, bringing practical solutions to the table that address both immediate needs and long-term strategic objectives.
