Energy Transition & Renewables
Helping you develop, connect, finance and deliver the projects powering Australia’s energy transition.
To bring an energy project to market, you need to resolve connection and access, network capacity, land and approvals, project structure, financing, offtake and construction risk. Each of these affects whether your project is viable and bankable.
Piper Alderman’s national Energy & Resources team advises on the generation, storage, firming and transmission projects driving the transition: wind, solar, battery storage, gas-fired firming, waste-to-energy, hydrogen and the network connections that bring them to market.
Connecting your project to the grid
Our transmission experience gives you an edge. Having advised on many of Australia’s major transmission projects, including Project EnergyConnect and Eyre Peninsula Link, we understand the connection, access and network issues that decide whether new generation and storage gets built, and on what terms.
Shared and multi-user infrastructure
Shared and multi-user infrastructure is increasingly what makes new projects viable, and it is a particular strength of ours. Experience includes advising on complex National Electricity Rules issues, including Australia’s first access policies for dedicated connection assets and designated network assets, and the access and cost-sharing arrangements that allow multiple projects to connect through them. We also advise on common-user infrastructure for hydrogen and energy hubs, district energy schemes and complex embedded networks with behind-the-meter generation and storage, for precincts, industrial sites and major developments.
One team from investment to operation
Piper Alderman brings corporate, project structuring, finance and delivery expertise together in one team. Whether you are acquiring a project, investing in one, financing it or building it, the lawyers advising you understand what it needs to be bankable and how the risk allocation will play out in delivery.
Battery storage and data centres
Battery storage is a core part of our practice, with experience advising BESS developers, investors and contractors on acquisitions, connection, tolling and offtake, EPC and O&M arrangements. We also advise on the power and water infrastructure behind Australia’s data centre growth, one of the fastest-growing sources of new energy demand.
